所谓when和while，都是关系副词。中文翻译为“当…的时候”、“在…的时候”等。它们在用法上有所差异。
1. when 用法：when 通常引导的是时间状语从句。
例如：
① I was taking a shower when the phone rang. （我正在洗澡的时候电话响了。）
② When she was young, she wanted to travel the world. （她年轻的时候想周游世界。）
2. while 用法：while 也可以引导时间状语从句，但要表示的时间段必须要长。
例如：
① She had to wait for half an hour while the doctor was in surgery. （医生在手术时，她等了半小时。）
② You should listen carefully while the teacher is speaking. （老师在讲课的时候你应该认真听。）
另外，while 还有“然而，尽管”的意思。
例如：
While I appreciate your help, I wish you had asked me first. （尽管我感激你的帮助，但我希望你先问问我。）
